no -brain (er)

I was talking to a plumbing contractor from Minnesota the other day and he was bidding a big box remodel that had several hundred feet of  excavating ,that had to be done fume -free . He figured 250 labor hours if the subgrade was good . He had his labor priced at $50.00 per hour . He also figured that if he could use an excavator on the job he could do it in 40 hours . Do the math - no-brainer ,right ? For this guy, yes for many others , no . For some strange reason smart contractors that would never use a shovel and a wheelbarrow outdoors ,will put laborers with shovels and wheelbarrows on projects inside buildings. Go figure.
